Liverpool's Philipp Degen seals season long loan move to Stuttgart

Defender switches to Bundesliga to reignite career....

Philip Degen is aiming to get his career back on track after completing his transfer from Liverpool to Bundesliga side Stuttgart on a season long loan.

The Swiss international defender moved to Anfield in 2008 on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund but has rarely been given an opportunity in the Red's first-team.

Degen was one of former manager Rafael Benitez’s signings, but is now deemed surplus to requirements under new boss Roy Hodgson.

The full-back will link-up with former Tottenham Hotspur manager Christian Gross at the Bundesliga outfit, a coach he's previously worked under while at Swiss side FC Basel.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge and the wonderful VfB fans,” Degen told the Press Association.

"I really want to make use of my chance. It's fantastic to be working together with Christian Gross again. I had a very successful time with him in Basel."

Gross, who has been manager of Stuttgart since December 2009, was happy to enhance his squad with a proven international player.

"I know Philipp [Degen] very well and rate him highly, both as a football player and as a person,” said Gross.

"He is a very athletic and fast player, who often looks to push forward. Philipp wants to take his chance at VfB."
